Why Your Smile Benefits From A Checkup And Cleaning

With New Year’s Eve just a few days away, many of us will be thinking about resolutions. To help better your overall health in 2021, don’t forget about your smile! In today’s blog, your Austin, MN, dentists explain how a routine exam and cleaning could help you obtain a brighter, stronger smile.

The Value of a Routine Exam

With an exam is a chance for our team to take a close look at your smile. We will use advanced digital technology to look at the surfaces of the teeth and gums, and also peer at the roots, jaw, and oral structures. The exam allows us to identify the presence of cavities, infection, gingivitis, gum disease, and TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding) as well. We also screen for oral cancer once a year for our adult patients. The sooner we identify the presence of oral health issues, the sooner we administer treatment to help your family avoid complications that could threaten the stability of the teeth! These visits should happen at least once every six months, and benefits kids and adults alike.

Cleaning Your Teeth

During the same visit, our team will also take time to thoroughly clean your smile. While brushing and flossing are crucial for your oral health, these actions don’t remove plaque and tartar (calcified plaque). By removing these layers with an ultrasonic scaler and a manual tool, we lower the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. We also help prevent bad breath and teeth stains as well! The process only takes a few minutes to complete and ends with a thought polishing of your smile for a brighter appearance.

Protecting Your Smile at Home

Following your routine visit, you should continue to care for your smile at home to remove food particles and limit the severity of plaque and tartar buildup in between office visits. You should brush your teeth when you wake and once more before bed, for at least two minutes each session. Make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride too! We also suggest flossing before bed as well, as flossing removes the trapped food particles out of reach of your toothbrush’s bristles. If you have any questions about these visits, or if you would like to schedule one for you or a member of your family, then contact our team today. We want to help you enjoy your best possible smile in the coming year!
