Your Tooth Decay Prevention: It’s Only Complete If…

In short, our Austin, MN team would like to remind you that your tooth decay prevention is only complete if you’re checking off every single task that you are required to follow in order to stop cavities from forming! With that said, however, you may wonder: What’s on this list and is it hard to accomplish? As for the degree to which you will be required to put forth effort, we are always happy to report to patients that the preventive care needed to stop decay from showing up is actually very easy and not quite as complex as you might assume. If…You’re Brushing

If you’re not brushing your teeth, then you’re not fully practicing the preventive care necessary to avoid tooth decay. Remember, you need a soft-bristle toothbrush, fluoridated toothpaste, and you need two minutes per session, so you’re removing all of the buildup that contributes to the potential development of oral health concerns (and a need for fillings).

If…You’re Brushing Correctly

The brushing portion of your preventive care that helps you avoid cavities? It definitely has to happen in the morning and then again at the end of the day. As you know, if it’s not taking four minutes each day, it’s not enough! Remember, as well, that in order to brush correctly, you must brush everything. Brush all tooth surfaces, along your gumline, and your tongue’s surface, too!

If…You’re Flossing

If you’re flossing, then this is the second step of your home preventive dental care that helps you avoid the formation of tooth decay! Remember that you should use about a foot and a half of floss each session!

If…You’re Flossing Correctly

Are you being thorough? Again, just like with brushing, you need to floss your entire smile. Between all teeth. One side then the next tooth’s side. Behind back teeth. Start just under gum tissue and work your way up! If you need help, let us know, and we will run through it with you. It’s just one flossing session daily that helps you keep your smile safe!

If…You’re Seeing Us, Too!

If you’re practicing your dental hygiene at home, including your brushing and flossing as mentioned, then you’re almost there. However, your prevention isn’t quite complete! You have to remember that you must also see our team for dental checkups and cleanings. This should happen twice every year, preferably spaced out by six months, so it’s happening on a very consistent basis!
