What To Expect During A Dental Exam

ExamSome people become fearful when it is time for their annual physician’s exam, but there is no need to be fearful of a dental exam. Dental exams and cleanings are preventive measures to keep your teeth, jawbone, and oral tissues healthy. Allyour bodily systems are connected so the healthier your mouth, the healthier your body. Dentists and hygienists know that many people are fearful of the dentist and dental procedures. That is why they are as friendly and gentle as possible. And with today’s technology, a dental exam and cleaning is easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy. So, if you’re wondering what to expect during your dental exam, you are in the right place.

Plaque

Your teeth develop plaque everyday all day long. Plaque is that clear, sticky coat of saliva, oral bacteria, oral skin cells, and food debris. Plaque is easy to remove with proper daily oral hygiene (brushing and flossing). But, if plaque isn’t removed within 24 hours it begins to harden into tartar, and tartar can only be removed with a professional cleaning. Bacterial plaque can lead to tooth decay, gingivitis, periodontitis, and eventually tooth loss and jawbone atrophy, hence, the dental exam and cleaning to prevent that from happening.

The Exam

During the exam your dentist or hygienist will look at your teeth, gums, tongue, and other oral tissues. They will use the DIAGNOdent system to detect cavities in their earliest stages, and take digital x-rays, which will show the goings-on beyond what the naked eye can see.

Oral Cancer Screening

An annual oral cancer screening is part of your exam, too. Again, using advanced digital imaging equipment your dentist or hygienist will look for:

  • Irregular lesions on the lips, tongue, or other oral tissue
  • Red or white spots in your mouth
  • Thick rough spots
  • Sores that won’t heal, and more

An Ounce of Prevention…

Every step of your bi-annual dental exam is to prevent against oral/dental damage and disease. Like Benjamin Franklin said: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
