What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea happens when the oral tissues in your throat block the airway. The tissues collapse, making it more difficult to breathe. When this happens, you snore, but your snoring stops when the airway is completely blocked. That means you are no longer breathing, and your body forces itself to wake up so your airway can be cleared. This process may happen hundreds of times when you are sleeping. Over time, the sleep interruption may affect your overall health and well-being.
What Can Be Done About It?
A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask and machine is often suggested to people who experience sleep apnea. However, many people may benefit from a custom-designed sleep appliance that is worn in the mouth when sleeping.
