Does A Loose Or Cracked Tooth Need Extraction?

We always try to repair damaged teeth or those with serious oral health issues with lifelike restorations. But what happens when a tooth simply cannot be repaired? When should you talk to your Austin, MN, dentists about dental extraction? In today’s blog, we look at when a tooth may need removal, and what that process involves.

Reasons to Remove a Tooth

If the breakage or fractures are simply too severe to adequately repair with a crown or other restorative process, we may suggest extracting the tooth. Likewise, if dental cavities or infection are beyond treating and the tooth remaining in place threatens to spread infection, we often take them out. We could also remove teeth loosened by gum disease, or take one out to make room to reposition others if you have severe dental misalignment. One of the most common reasons we suggest removing a tooth, is to address wisdom teeth. Also known as third molars, these additional teeth erupt in our late teens and early 20s. For many, they could cause a painful partial eruption known as impaction, or lead to misalignment, infection, or damaged teeth. Extraction prevents these major complications from ever occurring!

The Tooth Extraction Process

First, we will explain what will happen in the procedure and address any questions or concerns you may have. We then administer a local anesthetic and sedation to help you remain calm and comfortable throughout the process. Using forceps, we gently take out the teeth in questions, and then we suture the area closed. A friend or family member will bring you home, and we will provide detailed instructions for aftercare.

What Happens Next?

For the first day or two, try to avoid hard food items, don’t use a straw when drinking, and don’t prod the extraction site with your tongue. Take your prescribed medications as instructed, and be sure to attend your follow-up visits, so we can monitor your healing process and also remove your sutures. If you have a gap in your smile, we can discuss replacement options, such as dental bridges, partial dentures, or dental implants. We want to ensure you continue to enjoy a full and beautiful smile.
