Healthier Smiles With A Simple Cleaning

A dental cleaning is about more than just fighting teeth stains and bad breath. Having your teeth regularly cleaned could also help fight serious oral health problems like tooth decay and even gum disease. In today’s blog, your Austin, MN, dentists will look at two different types of cleanings, and the benefits they offer your smile.

The Impact of Plaque and Tartar

Over time, bacteria will break down the particles left on and between our teeth by the foods and drinks we consume. This is especially true of the particles high in sugar and starch! As bacteria consumes these particles, this elevates oral acidity and coats the teeth in plaque buildup. Brushing and flossing cannot remove plaque, and it will harden over time into tartar. Without removal, the buildup could weaken and erode the outer enamel, and inflame gum tissues. The risk of tooth decay and gum disease elevates, as does the risk of bad breath and stained teeth. While brushing and flossing can limit how much buildup occurs, only a six-month cleaning can remove the buildup entirely!

Removing Buildup

The procedure is a simple one. We will use an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool to remove all plaque from the surfaces of the teeth. We then polish the teeth thoroughly for a brighter appearance and smoother feel. The procedure then helps prevent issues like cavities and periodontal disease, and allows you to smile with confidence. We suggest these visits every six months for kids ages two and older, and for teens, adults, and seniors too. If you haven’t scheduled one for you or a member of your family, we urge you to do so soon!

Scaling and Root Planing

What if your plaque is so severe that gingivitis or the early stages of gum disease have formed? If so, we may suggest a deep cleaning that removes buildup from both the teeth and the roots too. The procedure could take one visit or up to four, depending on the severity of your buildup. We then polish your teeth and may recommend a regular cleaning every three to four months afterward. This scaling and root planing could reverse gingivitis and help manage gum disease, protecting your smile from sore, bleeding gums and even tooth loss!
